2008 FIBA/Olympic Basketball

Some general information:

Olympic rosters are limited to 12 players, 5 fellow athletes who are allowed to travel with the team in addition to coaching staff, trainers, and medical staff.  Some countries have already established their 12 player rosters (USA is set).  Others are still working on rosters, especially those teams facing play-in games in July and teams with injury problems (Germany has lost 3 key players).

In Olympic basketball, players are eliminated after 5 fouls, not 6.  Usually, far more physical contact is allowed in international play, but there is still the concern of players fouling out more easily.

There are four ten-minute quarters in the game.

The basketball has fewer panels than the ball used in the NBA game so there is a different feel to the ball.

It is legal to take the ball off the rim without getting a goal tending violation.

For anyone interested, I will post a link to the official rules.  There is one rule book for games officiated by 2 referees and a separate rule book for games refereed by 3 refs.  International play will be moving toward 3 refs, but I'm not sure that 3 refs will be used in the 2008 Olympic games.
